Abstract

As an existential threat, hazard gas leakage caused by chemical warfare agent attack and accidents needs proper protection measures for people and soldiers. Activated carbon has long been used in gas mask as a filling material of filter cartridge canister. However the development for new material is required to increase adsorption capacity and chemical warfare agent selectivity. This study used lab-made zirconium based metal organic frameworks (MOFs) to measure the adsorption capacity of a chemical warfare agent simulant diisopropyl methylphosphonate (DIMP). The adsorption characteristics were compared with the activated carbon used in commercial gas masks. XRD analysis showed manufactured MOFs have similar crystal structure with existing literary results and display high specific surface area and micropore distribution compared to commercial activated carbon. MOFs had higher adsorption capacity than commercial activated carbon. DIMP adsorbed on MOFs was identified through XPS, EDS, FTIR and element analysis. UiO-66 of MOFs showed relatively small specific surface area compared to UiO-67A and UiO-67H, but showed high adsorption capacity for DIMP. XRD and specific surface area analysis showed that unlike P-UiO-66, the sample of P-UiO-67A and P-UiO-67H showed collapsed crystal structures after DIMP adsorption and sharp decrease in the results of specific surface area measurements. Therefore cautious approach is required when considering UiO-67 as a sorbent for DIMP adsorption.
