Abstract
The purpose of this study was to analyze the health belief factors influencing Chinese university students' perceptions of psychological health and physical activity, as well as their actual participation in physical activity, based on the Health Belief Model (HBM). Data were collected through an online survey of 302 college students from six universities in Anhui and Hubei provinces, China (Anhui University, Anhui Agricultural University, Fuyang Normal University, Wuhan University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, and Hubei College of Arts and Sciences). A total of 292 questionnaires were included in the final analysis. The study employed path analysis and structural equation model based on the HBM framework to examine the relationships between health belief factors and in physical activity. The analysis revealed that perceived susceptibility and perceived severity did not significantly influence health behavior. In contrast, perceived benefits, perceived barriers, and self-efficacy were identified as key factors that significantly affected health behavior. While the HBM model demonstrated significant predictive power for health behavior, its explanatory power was found to be limited (𝑅²=.165, 𝑄²=.126). These findings suggest the necessity of incorporating additional external factors such as social and cultural influences, to enhance the comprehensiveness of the HBM. This study is expected to assess the applicability of the health belief model in promoting psychological health and physical activity among college students and provide fundamental data for designing health behavior intervention strategies.
