Abstract
In the 1970s, Korea’s characteristics as a ‘Hypermasculine developmental state’ became the basis of the ‘National modernization project’ that made people one state. Films that deeply affected the public in the 1970s, especially literary films, were media that consciously and unconsciously spread national ideology and led people to respond. This is because ‘literary films’ in the 1960s and 1970s contained two meanings: the aesthetic value of the film itself and that it was a film guaranteed by the state. Therefore, the essence of literary film text can only be fully revealed when examining not only the aesthetic value of the film but also the tacit context of the national ideology of the 1970s. This is also why the three characters in the 1975 literary film <The way to Sampo> clearly match the three types of subjects who respond allegorously to national ideology. First, ‘Mr. Jeong’ is a subject who wants to escape from national ideology. Released from the ideological nation device ‘prison’, Jeong wants to return to his hometown of Sampo, an iconic pre-modern place. However, Sampo, which has been transformed into a modern space integrated into national ideology, is no longer a place for Mr. Jeong. Jeong is forced to choose between nation and non-nation exclusively. And Film paints it with feelings of mourning and sadness. Film does not point this out clearly, only suggesting as a symptom that Koreans at the time had no choice but to make an exclusive choice due to the threat of national ideology. Unlike Mr.Jeong, ‘Yeongdal’ has already lost his hometown. To him, his hometown is a place of castration. Therefore, he suffers from an obsession to show off his masculinity and receive confirmation from others to fantastically fill the empty signifier of masculinity. However, Yeongdal’s hard work (obsession) is in fact the image of a state that the political power that needs ‘labors’ who will devote themselves to the modernization of the nation most desires. Yeongdal is a figure who symbolically shows the process of individuals being castrated by the powerful patriarchal function of the nation, but at the same time, the nation has filled his powerless phallic signifier with the name of ‘diligent labor’ and has been reborn him as the subject of the modernization of the nation. Strangely, ‘Baekhwa’ confirms her identity as a subject even without castration. Baekhwa, who is captivated by two men, is recognized as a ‘Subject who is assumed to have Jouissance’ who lives fulfilling her desires without castration. Specifically, to Yeongdal, Baekhwa is represented as a feminine figure who reveals her sexual preferences, and to Mr.Jeong, Baekhwa is represented as a feminine figure like a daughter. However, in response to the call of the nation, women at the time had to fill the lost Jouissance of men for men. But Baekhwa was a feminine subject who spoke up for herself and was true to her own desires. Because of this, the film no longer shows Baekhwa. This is because she has deviated from the choice expected by the two men. This film uses the beautiful snowy landscape surrounding the three characters heading to Sampo to cover up the desolate and dreary 70s with a romantic and lyrical context. However, the process of transferring the context actually produces the paradoxical effect of the film revealing the era allegorically and exposing its unconsciousness.
