Abstract

The cyanoacrylate (CA) fuming method, a primary choice to develop latent fingerprints on nonporous surfaces, shows limited efficiency with aged fingerprints because of the degradation of the lactate ion, the proposed initiator of the CA polymerization, and evaporation of water etc. Therefore, we tested the pre-treatment of sodium lactate (mixed with carrier powder; SiO2 and Al2O3) on aged fingerprints before CA fuming to improve development efficacy. This modified CA fuming method provided a fast, clear, strong and efficient development. The improved number of minutia points and larger areas of the ridges in treated fingerprints compared to untreated fingerprints were found. Further studies using other surfaces and other carrier powders are needed to qualify this modified CA method that could be used for the improved development of the aged fingerprints.
