Abstract
Bitcoin is a decentralized digital virtual asset based on blockchain technology, which provides both transparency and anonymity in transactions. However, this anonymity is frequently exploited as a means of money laundering in various cybercrimes such as ransomware incidents, and as the methods have become more complex and sophisticated in recent years, effective detection has become difficult. Existing money laundering detection studies mainly focus on theoretical approaches or limited case-centered analyses, and there is an academic gap in the lack of empirical analysis based on actual crime cases. Therefore, this paper attempted to effectively detect suspicious wallet addresses and fund flows used for money laundering by utilizing Bitcoin wallet addresses and transaction data obtained from actual ransomware crime investigations. This study used a total of 2,028 wallet addresses and 11,271 transaction data collected from May 2017 to November 2022, and intensively analyzed the top 3% of wallet addresses with high centrality indices by applying SNA’s degree centrality, closeness centrality, and betweenness centrality after MD5 hashing and data standardization for personal information protection. The analysis results showed that wallet addresses with high degree centrality and closeness centrality play a key role in the actual money laundering process. In particular, addresses with high degree centrality effectively captured the pattern of concentrated small transactions, which is a major characteristic of money laundering, but betweenness centrality showed relatively low detection significance because money laundering has a pattern of bypassing the central path of the network. This study empirically demonstrated that a methodology using SNA centrality theory can be effectively utilized for money laundering detection in actual investigation sites, and has great academic and practical significance in that it provides practically useful analysis tools and methodology for the investigation and prevention of crimes utilizing virtual assets including Bitcoin in the future.
