Abstract

The aim of this study is to propose directions for the Korean military to prepare for the increasing significance of urban area operations on the modern battlefield. To achieve this, the research analyzes the impact of urban environmental changes on military operations, examines relevant precedents from major advanced countries, and assesses the current status of the Korean military's readiness. The study yields the following results: Firstly, there is a need for the development of comprehensive urban area operational doctrines, focusing on aspects such as civilian control and joint operations. Secondly, advancements should be made in the utilization of drone-bot combat systems incorporating AI technology and the integration of both manned and unmanned capabilities to enhance sniper operations. Thirdly, the study emphasizes the development of a scientific training system based on a synthetic training environment tailored for urban settings. Fourthly, it highlights the importance of training and nurturing subject matter experts in urban warfare. Lastly, the establishment of infrastructure through collaboration between civil authorities, the military, industry, academia, research institutes, and urban experts is emphasized. The developmental directions proposed in this study are expected to be valuable for the Korean military in systematically preparing for urban operations in future conflicts.
