천도교소년회 초기 활동 연구 -천도교회월보를 중심으로-

2021년 5월 1일은 천도교소년회 창립 100주년이다. 천도교소년회는 방정환을 정점으 로 하는 한국 어린이운동의 모체라는 상징적인 의미가 있다. 그동안 어린이운동은 방정 환을 비롯한 운동가나 어린이날 행사, 그리고 동화 구연 활동이나 동화 작품을 중심으로 연구되어 왔다. 그러나 천도교소년회를 창립한 이후 초기 3년간의 활동은 어린이운동의 기본정신을 이해하는 중요한 관건이 된다. 이 시기의 천도교소년회 활동은 주로 <천도 교회월보>라고 하는 천도교의 기관지에 많이 실려 있는 바, 그 내용을 깊이 들여다볼 필 요가 있다. 이를 통해 볼 때, 천도교소년회 회원들의 구성 특징, 초기 활동의 구체적인 내용, 그리고 방정환을 비롯한 지도자와 소년회원 간의 소통, 어린이운동을 접한 소년들 의 정서적 변화 등을 알 수 있었다. 천도교소년회 초기 활동 연구는 앞으로 소년회원들 의 활동과 그 정서적 변화 등을 면밀히 검토함으로써, 어린이운동의 원형을 재구성하는 데로 확장될 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
May 1, 2021 marks the 100th anniversary of the foundation of the Cheondogyo Boys and Girls’ Association. The Cheondogyo Boys and Girls’ Association has a symbolic meaning of being the mother of the Korean children’s movement, which culminates in Bang Jung-hwan. Until now, children’s movements have been studied mainly by activists, children’s day events, and fairy tale-telling activities and fairy tale works, including Bang Jung-hwan. However, the early three-year activities since the foundation of the Cheondogyo Boys and Girls’ Association are important to understand the basic spirit of the children’s movement. The activities of the Cheondogyo Boys and Girls’ Association during this period are mainly published in the organ of Cheondogyo, called <Monthly Journal of Cheondo Church(天道敎會月報)>, and it is necessary to take a deep look at the contents. Through this, we could see the characteristics of the composition of the members of the Cheondogyo Boys and Girls’ Association, the details of the initial activities, communication between leaders including Bang Jung-hwan, and members of Boys and Girls’ Association, and changes of members’ emotion. The early activities of the Cheondogyo Boys and Girls’ Association can be expanded to reconstruct the original form of the children’s movement by closely examining the activities of the youth members and their emotional changes in the future.
