Abstract

So far this paper has tried to establish a basic perspective with which to study prosody of Korean modern poetry. This paper tries to argue that modern poetry is not completely free of meters, but is in pursuit of a new prosody to shake off the inflexibility of the previous poetic words by utilizing new poetic words. Moreover, the prosody of free verses is not an individual or subjective phenomenon, but is based on the common metrical ability that we share. So some systematic studies on it are necessary and also possible. In this perspective, prosody of Korean poetry should be discussed in the following three dimensions. Those studies are to investigate how three dimensions of features making up prosody, that is, prosodic factors in syntactic, phonological, and phonetic dimensions, realize themselves in a specific poem to create poetic effects. The greatest emphasis should be put on the relationship between prosody and meaning of a poem. Prosody doesn't simply make up a formal frame, but creates a new sentiment and meaning by breaking everyday words and automaticity of previous words into new sound organisms. So it is the most essential part of prosodic studies of modern poetry to find out how prosody turns to meaning and how meaning is modified by sounds. Further, we should build up a metrical model and have abstract discussion on the metrical system. More than anything else, we should approach a specific poem in a phenomenal and microscopic way to find what prosodic features are used in modern poems, how they are used, and how much effective they are.
