Abstract

A Study on the Development of Free Verse Theory in Modern Korean Poetry.Jang, Do JoonModern Korean poetry has undergone a lot of changes in the 20th century. As the modern poetry in Korean literature is differentiated from that of the previous periods, its study must be based upon the discussions about its characteristic features.In Korean literature, free verse theory was rarely appeared until 1910. The main stream of its theory made its appearance in the 1910s. Theory of free verse rhythm was started by Kim OekBaek Dae-JinHwang Seuk-Woo etc. One interesting feature about the theory is that it did not flourish very lively in the 1920s. However, the modern free verse became the prevailing poetic mode of the period. The reason is due to the fact that the lack of consciousness of free verse rhythm and the movement of folk poetry and Sijo revival.
