Abstract
This paper aims to outline the issues and literary debates in the Second Choson Writers’ Congress in 1956 that were connected to the building process of the North Korean party-censored literature. This process promoted by North Korea to make its own version of socialist realism, which was previously based on the Soviet model, can be seen as the “Koreanization” of socialist realism. The main issue in a series of debates was how to promote mature socialist realism in the North Korean context and such discussion continued, even if with changes, until “the monolithic ideological system of the party” was declared in 1967. This paper argues that the debates which began with the 1956 Second Choson Writers’ Congress and continued until 1967, happened to be particularly open and active because of the Soviet’s changes after Stalin’s death. It also suggests that key issues in the congress include: advancing researches on the national heritage and developing national forms to fit people’s contemporary tastes; supporting advanced translations of leading Soviet literary theories and works; promoting the project for dispatching writers to learn from the reality and characterize new men in the new reality. This paper will contribute to the current study on the Koreanization of socialist realism in its early phrase.
