초록

대만 민주화 이후 양안 경제교류 문제는 분열된 족군 및 국가 정체성과 그에 기반한 통일 혹은 독립 지향이라는 이분법적 논리로 정치화되었다. 그러나 본 연구는 최근 이 문제가 족군이 아닌 시민으로서의 대만인 정체성 부상과 양안교역에 대한 합리적 인식이라는 새로운 정치 쟁점으로 인해 보다 복잡한 양상을 띠고 있음을 고찰했다. 또한 주로 배타적 대만인 정체성을 가진 젊은 세대가 그러한 전환을 야기한 추동력임을 주장했다. 탈중국화된 대만인 정체성은 하나의 ‘뉴노멀’ 현상으로, 앞으로 더욱 첨예한 양안관계 갈등을 초래할 것으로 예상된다. 본고가 제기한 정체성과 경제적 합리성은 대만뿐 아니라 홍콩 등 정경분리의 패러독스와 정체성 갈등을 겪는 사례 연구에 시사점을 제공한다.

Abstract

In the post-democratization era of Taiwan, the issue of cross-strait economic exchange was politicized with a dichotomous logic of unification and independence based on the divided ethnic and national identities in the island. This study, however, analyzes that the matter has become more complicated due to new political issues such as the rise of Taiwanese civic identity instead of islander ethnic identity and a rational perception of the cross-strait trade. It also argues that the young generation with an exclusive Taiwanese identity is the driving force behind such a transformation. Taiwanese identity as a de-sinicized national identity has become a “new normal” phenomenon, which is expected to lead to more complex and sharper conflicts across the Taiwan Strait in the future. The civic identity and economic rationality presented in this article provide new perspectives not only for Taiwan but for other case studies such as Hong Kong, which has the paradox of political-economic separation and identity conflicts.
