Abstract
In major economies, active research on Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) is underway to establish a highly credible and efficient payment system that maximizes benefits of digital currency. In Canada and Singapore, projects are being implemented to use wholesale digital token CBDC for an efficient next-generation payment system for large transactions. And, in Sweden and China, use of cash is dwindling fast and discussions on adopting retail CBDC are underway. While wholesale digital token does not affect central bank’s and commercial banks’ asset size or composition, retail CBDC can have diversified effects across the financial system including monetary policy, payment system, and financial stability. Introducing retail CBDC is expected to provide a credible and convenient digital payment tool that can replace cash, and also enhance overall effectiveness of monetary policy. However, on the other hand, its growing use might weaken banks’ role as a financial intermediary, and raise a risk of a digital run as bank deposits can be freely exchanged with risk-free central bank digital currency.
