IT의 발달과 함께 여러 종류의 가상화폐가 등장하고 있다. 이 중 비트코인은 모든 이용자들의 협력에 기초한 수평적 금융네트워크를 통해 이중지불의 문제를 낮은 비용으로 안전하게 해결했다는 점에서 혁신적인 것으로 평가받고 있다. 그래서 비트코인이 기존 화폐 제도를 대체할 것이라는 전망이 나오고 있다. 그러나 비트코인의 비판자들은 그것이 대안화폐로 기능할 수 없다고 주장한다. 이 논문은 화폐의 본성에 관한 이론적 논쟁(상품화폐론, 명목주의 화폐론)을 기초로 비트코인의 옹호론과 비판론을 살펴보고자 한다. 옹호론자들은 화폐가 기본적으로 유통수단이며, 시장에서 자생적으로 발생⋅진화하는 것이므로, 중앙은행의 규제가 필요 없다고 주장한다. 하지만 이 논문은 화폐란 사회적⋅정치적⋅경제적 성격을 총체적으로 반영한 존재라는 입장에서 비트코인의 경제적⋅정치적⋅사회적인 한계들을 지적한다.
Abstract
Several Kinds of virtual currencies have emerged with the development of IT. Among them, Bitcoin is considered to be innovative in that it solves the ‘double spending problem’ safely at low cost through the horizontal financial network which is based on the cooperation of all users. So Bitcoin is expected to replace the existing monetary system. On the other hand, critics argue that it can not be an alternative currency. This paper explores the advocates and critics of Bitcoin on the basis of theoretical debate(Commodity Theory of Money, Nominalist Theory of Money) about the nature of money. In view of the advocates, money is basically means of circulation and is spontaneously born and evloving in the market. So the regulation of the central bank is not required. However, criticizing that such a view is based on the theory of money emphasizing a very narrow economic terms, this paper discusses the economic, political and social limits of Bitcoin on the perspective that the nature of money is political and economical.
