법정의 수행론에 대한 심리학적 해석

법정(1932~2010) 스님은 ‘무소유’ 사상을 통해 현대 사회의 물질주의와 심리적 소외 문제를 성찰하고, 이를 극복하기 위한 수행적・윤리적 지침을 제시한 현대 불교의 대표적 수행자이다. 종교적 수행법을 심리치유프로그램으로 재구성하려는 현대적 흐름에 주목하여, 본 연구는 법정스님의 수행관과 선사상에서 핵심 주제를 도출하고 이를 상담심리학적 구성요소와 연결하여 치료적・교육적 적용 가능성을 탐색하였다. 본 연구는 스님의 주요 저술에 대한 텍스트 기반 내용 분석과 기존 학술 연구 검토를 병행하여 수행관의 핵심 주제를 도출하고 이를 심리학적개념으로 해석하는 단계까지 진행하였다. 분석 결과, 법정 수행관의 여섯가지 핵심 요소가 도출되었다. 즉, 무집착(무소유), 침묵, 간소함과 절제, 자비와 연기적 사유, 자연과의 합일, 관법(觀法)이 그것이다. 이어서 이수행 요소들을 심리학적 개념으로 변환한 결과, 무소유는 비집착(non-attachment)과 관계적 유연성, 침묵은 자기성찰과 정서적 안정, 간소함과 절제는 자기조절(self-regulation), 자연과의 합일은 자기초월과자연 친화적 정서, 자비와 연기적 사유는 사회적 연결 인식과 관계적 감사로 해석되었다. 법정스님의 수행관은 치료적 안정성, 세속적 적용 가능성, 측정 가능성, 윤리성 측면에서 높은 적합성을 지니는 심리적 개념으로 변환될 수있다. 이러한 해석은 수행 개념을 현대적 언어로 번역하여 대중의 이해를높이고, 실증적 연구의 기반을 마련함으로써, 법정의 사상을 현대인의 정서 회복과 삶의 질 향상을 위한 심리교육적 자원으로 활용하는 학제 간교량 역할을 맡을 수 있을 것이다. 다만, 수행의 근본적인 존재론적 의미가 정서적 안정과 같은 도구적・기능적 차원으로 축소될 위험성에 대해서는 윤리적 주의가 필요하다.
Abstract
This study examines the teachings of the influential Korean Buddhist monk Beopjeong (1932–2010), particularly his philosophy of non-possession(Musoyu), and seeks to interpret its therapeutic im plications in the field of counseling psychology. First, through a lit erature analysis of Beopjeong's writings and literature, the study identifies and illuminates the core practical elements of his philoso phy of Buddhist practice: non-attachment, silence, simplicity, com passion, unity with nature, and mindful meditation. Next, the study systematically interprets these core Buddhist concepts into meas urable psychological constructs, such as non-attachment, self-re flection, self-regulation, and relational flexibility, and explores their potential for developing psychological intervention programs. Ultimately, this paper discusses the importance and limitations of applying psychological frameworks to religious thought, seeking a balance between broader popular applicability and the risk of un dermining the inherent existential and spiritual depth of the philosophy.
