Abstract

This study examines the thought of Venerable Beopjeong, who deeply resonated with modern Korean society, from an integrative perspective of Early Buddhism, Mahayana Buddhism, and Seon (Zen) Buddhism. Focusing on his core dharma talk collections, Ilgi Ilhoe (One Time, One Meeting) and One Person for All, All for One, this paper analyzes how his thought is deeply rooted in the practical teachings of early scriptures like the Sutta Nipata. It also inves tigates how the Mahayana spirit of compassion (karuṇā) and the Seon (Zen) practice of "ordinary mind is the Way" (平常心是道) are manifested integratively upon this Early Buddhist foundation. Moreover, this study explores why Ven. Beopjeong's thought is particularly emphasized within the context of Early Buddhism. It ar gues that this emphasis stems from his endeavor to return to the Buddha's original teachings through simplicity, as symbolized by 'non-possession' (musoyu); ethical practice centered on precepts (śīla); and the principle of self-reliance, "be your own light" (attadīpa/自燈明). In conclusion, the paper demonstrates that Venerable Beopjeong moved beyond conceptualized religion to pro pose, in modern language, that true happiness lies not in pos sessions but on the 'path of everyday life'.
