1950년 한국전쟁 이후 1960년대를 지나며 한국사회에서 민주화 운동의 과정에서 불교계의 민주화 운동에 대한 연구는 미미하다. 특히 1960 년에서 불교계가 사회 민주화에 영향을 미친 부분은 찾아보기 힘들 정도다. 이러한 시기에 법정은 한국전쟁의 참화를 겪는 전란의 소용돌이 속에서도 대학교육을 통해 세상을 바라보는 세계관을 형성했다. 출가한 후에도 해인사에서 대중생활을 하며 수행자로서의 자세를 확립했다. 법정은당시 해인사를 오갔던 시대의 민주인사인 장준하, 함석헌 선생 등과 교류했다. 법정은 1960년대에 들어서며 활동무대를 서울로 옮겨 사회 민주화에앞장섰다. 이는 다양한 신문과 잡지에 글쓰기를 통해 실현했다. 법정은1970년대에 들어서는 박정희 독재정권의 유신체제에 적극 항거해 탄압을받으면서도 유신철폐 개헌운동에 적극 나섰다. 이러한 법정의 행적은 그동안 1960년대와 1970년대의 불교 민주화 운동 역사에 기록하지 않았다. 1980년 광주민주화운동에 대해서도 승려 법정은 진실을 알리기 위해 다양한 글을 썼다. 승려 법정은 1990년대에도‘맑고 향기롭게’라는 시민운동을 주창하며 사회 민주화에 앞장섰다. 법정의 이같은 민주화 운동에 대한 기록은 불교 사회민주화 운동의 역사에반영되어야 한다.
Abstract
After the Korean War in 1950, there was little research in the 1960s on the democratization movement within the Buddhist com munity during the broader democratization efforts in Korean society. In particular, it is difficult to find evidence of Buddhism sig nificantly influencing social democratization during that time. During this period, Buddhist Ven. Beop-Jeong developed his worldview through university education despite the devastation left by the Korean War. Even after becoming a monk, he continued to live openly at Haeinsa Temple, establishing himself as a dedicated practitioner. At the temple, he interacted with Jang Joon-ha and Ham Seok-heon, who were active both inside and outside Haeinsa Temple. In the 1960s, Ven. Beop-Jeong moved his activities to Seoul and began taking a leading role in promoting social democratization, contributing to various newspapers and magazines. In the 1970s, he actively opposed Park Chung-hee’s dictatorship and campaigned for constitutional amendments to abolish the Yushin regime. However, historical records from the 1960s and 1970s largely overlook the involvement of Buddhist monks in the pro-democracy movement. Ven. Beop-Jeong’s contributions also became more prominent in the 1980s when he wrote extensively about the Gwangju Democratic Uprising. In the 1990s, Ven. Beop-Jeong further advanced his efforts for social democratization by advocating for the “Clean and Fragrant” civic movement. In conclusion, the role of Buddhist efforts toward social democ ratization, particularly the contributions of Ven. Beop-Jeong, should 법정(法頂)의 민주화 운동과 전개과정 여태동 45 be more accurately reflected in the historical record of Korea’s de mocratization movement.
