Abstract
This paper offers a religious studies interpretation of Chan Master Zhaozhou's “Go Have Some Tea”(喫茶去) koan, examining the daily and religious dimensions of tea drinking. Tea has played a central role in mediating the continuity between the daily life of the monastic community and their practice in Chan Buddhist temples. In this context, understanding “Go Have Some Tea” requires exam ining how tea is incorporated into Buddhist spaces and what sym bolic meanings it holds within religious practice. Drinking tea is both as a daily act within the temple and as a site of practice where enlightenment and teaching occur. Chan Master Zhaozhou's “Go Have Some Tea”, in particular, awakens the practitioners to the possibility of religious awareness and enlightenment through the daily act of drinking tea. This connects to practices for the develop ment of humanity through the tea ceremony and religious experiences. For the non-religious man, the act of drinking tea is merely an daily activity. For the religious man, however, it can function as an non-ordinary experience where the essential mean ing of existence and life can be discovered. Chan Master Zhaozhou's “Go Have Some Tea” reminds practitioners of the po tential for religious experience inherent in daily life, awakening them to the fact that every process of life can be a moment for en lightenment and a path to the way.
