Abstract

Zhuzi Parental Instruction is composed by Zhu Xi who is a famous educator and Confucianism philosopher in the Southern Song Dynasty. The book is a classic parental instruction in Song period, and it records the essence of Chinese traditional culture. It includes living styles, behaviorism, education, and ethics. It is also a classic of Neo-Confucianism about family discipline. Each dynasty and every family of China give priority to family discipline and courtesy, which is influenced by Confucianism and many other internal and external factors. Therefore, there are many works on family discipline and family education. The most famous ones are Yan Parental Instruction, Wen Family Education, Lv Family Education, Yuan Family Education, and Zhu Bolu’s Motto of Family Discipline. Besides, there are other family discipline and family rules that spread widely among civil society. Confucianism has been deeply rooted in China, so every Chinese is deeply conscious about “family”. It is millions of families that constitute the country, in other words, families are cells of the country. Therefore, the safety of one country and the harmony of one society are built upon stable and harmonious families. As the saying goes, a country has its state laws and a family also has its family rules. Only if nature persons as family members are bound by certain specific rules, can a society be harmonious. Zhuzi Parental Instruction influenced the ancient society greatly, as it was used as family rules as well as administrative principles by the governor. The content of Zhuzi Parental Instruction covers widely topics, including respecting the old and cherishing the young, righteousness and loyalty, behaviorism and so on. It analyzes concisely about ethics that families should follow. This paper classifies the content of Zhuzi Parental Instruction into four parts, discusses new issues that happen in modern society and family, and tries to illustrate that Zhuzi Parental Instruction is significant and contribute to the development of human and society, and emphasizes that it is necessary to develop and heritage Zhuzi Parental Instruction in modern society.
