Abstract
Purpose The purpose of this study is to concretize public perceptions of Power Taekwondo and, based on these insights, identify issues that need improvement to facilitate its adoption as an Olympic sport. Method The study analyzed 3,763 Korean-language and 787 English-language comments collected from YouTube between 2020 and 2024. The optimal number of topics was determined to be four based on the coherence score. Topic modeling was then performed using NetMiner v.4, and the yearly topic distribution was calculated using SPSS v.24 for Windows. Furthermore, the relationship between years and topic distribution was examined through a Spearman correlation analysis. Results The topic modeling results identified four topics: Topic 1 was named “Diversity of Kicking Techniques,” Topic 2 was named “Necessity of Olympic Rule Changes,” Topic 3 was named “Discussion on Scoring System Changes,” and Topic 4 was named “Essence of Martial Arts.” The correlation analysis between yearly topic distribution and time showed that Topic 2(rho=.043, p<.01) and Topic 3(rho=.174, p<.001) had significant positive correlations with time, whereas Topic 1(rho=-.153, p<.001) and Topic 4(rho=-.059, p<.001) had significant negative correlations with time. Conclusion Accordingly, this study suggests four improvement directions: expanding the dimensions of the competition area, simplifying the scoring system, addressing technical limitations of pneumatic electronic protectors, and increasing hand technique scoring opportunities along with revising penalty regulations. These proposed improvements are anticipated to foster a fairer and more intuitive competition format in Power Taekwondo, thereby preserving and promoting the essential nature of Taekwondo as a martial art.
