Abstract
Purpose This study analyzed the spirit of Taekwondo from a Confucian philosophical perspective and critically reexamines existing discourses. Method An interpretive qualitative research approach was employed including document analysis and comprehensive literature review (Elliott & Timulak, 2005). Results The study found that existing discourses on the spirit of Taekwondo focused on abstract and generalized ethical virtues commonly in other disciplines rather than highlighting its unique philosophical and practical significance within Taekwondo itself. Conclusion This study critiques prior research on the spirit and philosophy of Taekwondo, which often relies on traditional ideologies to compile lists of desirable virtues without critically engaging with their applicability. While some efforts have been made to explore the foundational meanings of ye and hyo, significant gaps remain in translating these concepts into actionable discussions relevant to contemporary practice. Future research should further investigate the Taekwondo spirit in relation to Confucian sijung and explore concrete methodologies for implementing ye and hyo in practical settings.
