목적 태권도 역사에서 논란이 있는 이승만 대통령의 ‘태권도’ 휘호에 대하여 첫째, 휘호의 배경 및 시기를 알아보고 둘째, 휘호를 토대로 간행된 태권도 신문을 파악하고 셋째, 휘호를 기반으로 결성된 태권도 단체를 다루며 넷째, 휘호를 계기로 개최된 태권도 개명기념 대회를 살펴보고자 한다. 방법 ‘태권도’ 휘호에 연관된 1950년대 신문자료를 중심으로 고찰하였다. 특히, 그동안 태권도 역사 연구에서 다루지 않았던 청도관의 기관지(機關紙) 『태권특보(跆拳特報)』를 찾아서 분석하였다. 결과 첫째, 이승만 대통령의 ‘태권도’ 휘호는 청도관 측 유력 인사들의 역할로 1956년 1월에서 7월 사이에 이루어졌다. 둘째, ‘태권도’ 휘호를 토대로 1956년 7월 17일에 태권도 신문인 『태권특보』가 발행되었다. 셋째, ‘태권도’ 휘호를 기반으로 1956년에 태권도 단체인 ‘대한태권도총본부’가 결성되었다. 넷째, ‘태권도’ 휘호를 계기로 1956년 7월 29일에 개명을 기념하는 ‘태권도 개명기념 연무대회’가 개최되었다. 결론 1956년에 이승만 대통령의 ‘태권도’ 휘호는 태권도 무명을 공식적으로 인정한 역사적 사실이다. 당시 기록의 발굴로 규명된 ‘태권도’ 휘호에 관한 전개는 태권도 역사로 재정립되어야 한다.
Abstract
Purpose This study examined President Rhee Syng Man’s ‘Taekwondo’ calligraphy, which has been controversial in the history of Taekwondo. Specifically, it revealed the background and period of the ‘Taekwondo’ calligraphy, the publication of the Taekwondo newspaper, the founding of the Taekwondo organization, and the holding of the competition to commemorate the renaming of Taekwondo. Method The literature review was mainly focused on newspaper articles related to President Rhee Syng Man’s ‘Taekwondo’ calligraphy. In particular, this study referred to the Taekwon Teukbo, which was not used in the study of Taekwondo history. Results First, President Rhee Syng Man’s ‘Taekwondo’ calligraphy was written between January and July 1956 by the role of influential figures in Chungdokwan. Second, Taekwon Teukbo as Taekwondo newspaper was published on July 17, 1956 due to the ‘Taekwondo’ calligraphy. Third, the ‘Korea Taekwondo Headquarters’ was formed as a Taekwondo organization in 1956 based on the ‘Taekwondo’ calligraphy. Fourth, the ‘Taekwondo Renaming Commemorative Competition’ held on July 29, 1956 with the ‘Taekwondo’ calligraphy was the official beginning of the Taekwondo name. Conclusion The ‘Taekwondo’ calligraphy of President Rhee Syng Man’s in 1956 is a historical fact that officially recognized the name of Taekwondo. The historical process of the ‘Taekwondo’ calligraphy, which was recorded at that time, should be reestablished as the history of Taekwondo.
