Abstract

Purpose This paper examines the formation and development of Chungdo-kwan, the origin of modern Taekwondo, and the founder of Won-guk Lee to produce a clear knowledge about the early history of Taekwondo. Method As for the research method, this is an analytical and historical study based on various newspaper derived from three kinds of search sites and the previous studies. The scope of the study is from the time of the Korea’s liberation when Chungdo-kwan was opened to a day before the Korean War in 1950. Results First, Chungdo-kwan was open at Yeongsin School four days before Korea’s liberation, but its activities were suspended at the Korea’s liberation. Thus the opening of Chungdo-kwan in Yeongsin School is not meaningful in Taekwondo history. The actual opening took place on January 15, 1946, at the Sicheon-gyodang. Second, the ‘Gwangsan-Jeongung’ mentioned in two recently discovered newspaper articles is very likely the Japanese name of Won-guk Lee, the founder of Chungdo-kwan. The basis for this is not only entirely consistent with the information on Won-guk Lee in the lateral newspapers and historical sources, but also the working career as a legal officer in Japan in a Japanese colonial era. Won-guk Lee’s martial arts experience includes training for five years at the main school of Songdo-kwan in Japan, where he achieved a 4th dan. Additionally, he made efforts to develop techniques focusing on kicking techniques, which were influenced by Taekkyeon. Third, Chungdo-kwan held regular training sessions at the Sicheon-gyodang, along with dan & geup testing and martial arts demonstrations. Dan & geup testing was held every six months, and a total of 10 tests were held from the opening until just before the Korean War. Martial arts demonstrations, combining regular events and special exhibitions, were held more than seven times. Conclusion Chungdo-kwan, considered the beginning of Taekwondo’s modern history, was launched on January 15, 1946, and its founder Won-guk Lee contributed a lot to the formation and development of Taekwondo based on kicking skills.
