Abstract
Purpose This study aims to explore the cultural and emotional significance of the 2025 Chuncheon World Taekwondo Culture Festival held in Gangwon Province, Korea, as a resource for spectator-oriented sports tourism, and to examine its potential value. Method To this end, the author employed Max van Manen’s hermeneutic phenomenological approach, collecting and analyzing data based on five days of on-site observation, retrospective memos, and spectator reactions. Results The situational structure revealed the sensory and emotional experiences of spectators through key moments such as the official welcome ceremony, Taekwondo matches, para-Taekwondo events, venue environment, and post-viewing impressions. The general structure further analyzed these experiences across themes of emotional immersion, sensory performance, spatial interaction, and cultural interpretation. The findings suggest that the Taekwondo festival extends beyond a mere sporting event and holds promise as a meaningful and distinctive spectator-oriented tourism resource. Conclusion This study demonstrates that the World Taekwondo Culture Festival serves as a complex experiential space that evokes emotional engagement and cultural messages beyond traditional sports viewing. These findings highlight the potential for diversifying sports tourism content and expanding Taekwondo as a viable cultural tourism asset.
