Abstract

The treatise focuses on Baek Seoks poems based on love(romantic love), what is called, the love poems. It analyzes Baek Seoks 8 poems. In the concrete, I divide poems into 3 categories by women in the poems. It shows that romantic love is one of the most efficient causes on the foundation of Baek Seoks love poems. Romantic love considers the love between man and woman as the greatest value in the world. The intrinsic attribute of romantic love is its sufficient impossibility. The sufficient impossibility gains the summit when a woman as an object of romantic love is unveiled as a forbidden object or a married woman who already got married and has babies(Despair, White wind wall). As the speaker or the poet looked at the scarce reality that was isolated from his ideal, he created the self-sufficient and self-complete fantasy. The fantasy appears concretely in his poem, I, Natatia and white donkey. In former days, a critic pointed out that Kim So Wal legitimated thoroughly the concept of romantic love in emotion. According to the critic, when the romantic love was brought into Korea and became popular in 1920s, Kims poems transfer the foreign concept of love or romantic love into the original tradition without any vestiges. When we consider the romantic love as a common denominator, we can Baek Seoks position in the history of Korean literature comparing with that of Kim So Wal. While Kims poems legitimated the concept of romantic love in emotion in 1920s, Baeks love poems developed and regularized it in 1930s. In addition, we should pay attention to the fact that his poems did not only song about emotional love between man and woman, but also the poems reached to the stage of the paradoxical affirmation about human beings in life(White wind wall).
