Abstract

In Japanese colonial period, the shrine of Shinto was used as a “strategy of space” in terms of the collapse of the colonized Joseon, the symbol of the colonial power’s change and the bio-government of the colonized through the ritual such as shrine worship. Such representative Shinto shrines are ‘Gukpesosa’, which represents each province, including Gwanpedeisa Joseon shrine. These Gukpesosa was located in important ritual spaces of the Joseon Dynasty, which lost its ritual authority after the annexation of Korea and Japan, and they visualized 'the loss of the old political power and the establishment of the new political power through ‘space’. Therefore, in this paper, the change of the space of the Sajikdan(the most important ritual space of Joseon) and its placeness will be examined from the perspective of ‘space strategy’, using the main research subjects of Gukpesosa Jeonju Shinto shrine and Shinto shrines that represented each administrative regions. Major national ritual facilities of Japanese imperialism such as Gukpesosa Jeonju Shinto shrine, Dogongjinsa Cheongju Shinto shrine and Eupgongjinsa Chungju Shinto shrine and Cheonan Shinto shrine were built on the site of the Sajikdan of the Joseon Dynasty. As Japanese heaven and earth’s gods became the supreme god of colonized Joseon, it symbolized that Shinto’s Gineonje(a ritual of Japanese empire) replaced Sajikje(a ritual of Joseon dynasty) and visualized ‘the loss of old power’ and ‘the establishment of the authority of the colonial regime’.
