A.S.C 동영상 속의 6․25전쟁과 국군 - 미 육군통신대 촬영, 아시아문화연구소 소장 동영상 자료를 중심으로 -

한림대학교 아시아문화연구소가 소장하고 있는 미 육군통신대(Army Signal Corps) 촬영 6․25전쟁 동영상 자료는 미국 국립문서기록관리청(the National Archives and Records Administration : NARA)에 보관된 35밀리 필름 자료의일부를 복사해 온 것이다. 이 영상물은 약 200시간 분량에 해당하는 ‘방대한 분량’이며, 모두 ADC(Army Depository Copy)와 LC(Library Copy) 넘버가 붙은가공되지 않은 ‘오리지널’ 상태의 자료이다. 또한 영상물 뿐 아니라 촬영 내용과인물, 시간, 장소 등을 기록한 영상카드를 함께 보유하고 있으므로 자료의 내용을보다 정확하게 파악할 수 있어, 향후 디지털 아카이브 작업이 완료되면 영상역사학의 측면에서 학계나 사회에 큰 반향을 불러일으킬 것으로 예상된다. 이 논고에서는 해당 자료를 직접 분류․정리하는 가운데 얻게 된 적지 않은 소득을 소개하고자 한다. A.S.C 동영상 자료는 문헌 기록의 보완 및 새로운 사료발굴 등과 같이 ‘사실 구명’이라는 측면에서 효용가치가 높다는 것이 사례 검토를통해 확인되었다. 또한, 일반에 널리 알려진 사진 자료가, 같은 각도에서 촬영된동영상과 합해지면 더욱 입체적인 접근과 효과적인 메시지 전달이 가능하다는 점도 확인하였다. 한편, 시론적 접근으로서 동영상 자료 속의 ‘국군’ 관련 사료를 검토해 보았다. 그 결과 기존 문헌 기록을 통한 전사 연구와 A.S.C 동영상 자료의영상역사학적 연구 방법이 상호보완적 상승효과를 낼 수 있다는 것을 확인하였다. 이로써, 6․25전쟁의 ‘살아 움직이는’ 영상역사학적 사료 제시가 가능하였다. 미흡하나마, 이상의 고찰을 통해 A.S.C 동영상에 대해 보다 심도 깊고 체계적인 연구가 진행되어야 할 가치와 필요성은 확인되었다. 이를 계기로 이 방대한분량의 ‘영상 역사 기록물’에 대해 학계 및 군을 비롯한 각계각층의 관심과 연구가진행되기를 기대한다. 끝으로, 현재 남아있는 해당시기 관련 영상자료와 문서자료는 ’60~’65년 전에촬영되거나 기록된 것이므로 자연 소실과 훼손의 위험성이 상존하고 있어, 체계적이고 분석적인 DB구축은 시급히 요청되는 국가적 사안이라는 점을 강조하고싶다.
Abstract
The Institute of Asian Culture Studies at Hallym University has a collection of video data on the Korean War filmed by the American Signal Corps, which it copied from the 35 mm filmic materials kept in the NARA(National Archive and Records Administration). The 'vast amount' of these video data comes to approximately 200 hours long, and all the materials are of a raw and 'original' nature, holding numbers of ADC(Army Depository Copy) and LC(Library Copy). Their attached video cards recording the content, personage,time, place, etc. regarding each material enable us to comprehend their substance more accurately. Accordingly, it is expected that it will attract great attention from the academic and social world when their digital archive is completed in the near future. This essay is to introduce not a few results that we got from our work for the arrangement and classification of these materials. It was confirmed from the examination over several cases that A.S.C video data are very useful for 'clarification of historical facts,' supplementing historical records and revealing new historical data. Also verified was that the juxtaposition of well-known photographs and these video materials filmed from the same angle contributes very much to concrete approach and effective delivery of message. On close examination into the data in connection with the 'Korean Army', it was found that the complementary cooperation between the historical study of warfare on the existing records and the approach of visual history on the A.S.C video data could produce a great synergy effect, making it possible that the records about the Korean War 'come to life' through visually historical data. These considerations show that a more systematic and in-depth study on the A.S.C video data is valuable and necessary. We are very hopeful that much attention will be given to these vast ‘historical video records’ from all levels of society including the academic and military world. Finally, it should be stressed that building a systematic and analytic DB is a national urgency in that there exists a possibility of natural abrasion and damage as the remaining visual data and documents were filmed or recorded 60 to 65 years ago.
