Abstract

This article rebuts Delburt Burkett’s argument and proposes that an interpretation in light of genre characteristics of Greco-Roman biography can offer a corrective reading. Burkett argues that Jesus’ transfiguration is not an epiphany but an apotheosis with two supporting ideas. (1) Jesus’ transfiguration lacks the primary feature of epiphany, the moment of recognition. (2)Moses’ transfiguration was not an epiphany, and thus Jesus’ transfiguration, the story created based on Moses’ transfiguration, cannot be an epiphany. Concerning (1), this article claims that Burkett does not recognize the importance of recurring motifs in Mark: disciples’ misunderstanding and messianic secret. Ironically enough, these motifs reveal the identity of Jesus more palpably. With regard to (2), this article argues that Jesus’ transfiguration focuses more on the differences between Jesus and Moses rather than the similarities. First, the way of describing Jesus’ transfiguration highlights Jesus as the protagonist. Second, different voices are used for expressing the shining of Jesus and that ofMoses. Third, unlikeMoses’ transfiguration, in Jesus’ transfiguration Jesus’ clothes, not his face, became radiant and the expression “exceedingly white” is added. These differences undermine the fact that Jesus is a divine figure whileMoses is a human. The use of comparison/contrast is another important genre characteristic of Greco-Roman biography.
