Abstract
Based on semiotic discourse by Charles S. Peirce, Park, Taewon’s 『Imjin Japanese Invasion』 and Kim, Hun’s 『Song of Sword』 were compared and analyzed in terms of narrative structure. 『Imjin Japanese Invasion』 shows attitude that recognize primary characteristics of the subject as the secondary fact which is historical experience. It tells the story through range of uncouth power which is action and reaction by focusing on the relationship between the object and subject. In 『Imjin Japanese Invasion』, the primary concern of the writer is to eradicate phenomenon of absurdity by uniting the capabilities and power of the people and Lee Sunsin’s cleverness, where feudal contradiction is prevalent and whole nation being slaughtered by foreign power. In terms of the problems of Jinlin, 『Imjin Japanese Invasion』 continues the description of Ming troops contained in 『Story of the General, Lee, Sunsin』. There is no description of the conflicts between Ming tropps and Joseon troops and the story is finished with Lee, Sunsin’s death when he was shot by a bullet from Japanese vessels while attempting to save Admiral Jinlin from being besieged by Japanese vessels. On the other hand, 『Song of Sword』 consistently adheres to critical perspective towards Ming army troops led by Yoo, Jeong and Ming naval forces led by Jinlin since they focus only on negotiating peace pact with Japanese forces and do not show initiative in the battle. However, the writer of 『Song of Sowrd』, Kim, Hun did not use much expression to describe Lee, Sunsin as a folk hero or national hero saving the country. By first person narrative, he used genuine expressions on the agony and internal pain suffered by Lee, Sunsin as an individual. Especially, Kim, Hun shows consistent interests on ‘Mediation’ of the tertiary features. Even though first person narrator, Lee, Sun-sin stands in the front, detailed analysis of 『Song of Sword』 shows that it strictly refrains from direct outburst of feelings but focus on indirect description through intermediates(mediation). In Park, Taewon’s 『Imjin Japanese Invasion』, he reinterprets the history within the context of the political and social environment in order to simply relate certain concepts with a semiotic sign, Lee, Sun-sin. On the contrary, in 『Song of Sword』 the sign appeals to another. In other words, in the mind of the person, a sign with identical values or even more developed sign is being created. Pierce named these relationship as ‘Interpretant’ of the signs and the movement of the signs is named ‘Symbol’. Kim, Hun brings narration of Lee, Sunsin under historical foundation, in order to identify new spiritual values and demonstrate sense of futility by adding ambiguity and uncertainty.
