6·25전쟁 휴전 후 미군 제8240부대 산하 유격대원의 국군 편입과정에 관한 연구

이 논문은 휴전 후 미군 제8240부대 산하 유격대원이 육군의 병적에 등록되는 과정에 관한 연구이다. 6·25전쟁 중 2만여 명의 한국인이 미군 제8240부대 산하 유격대원으로 활동하였다. 휴전 후에는 1만 1천여 명의 유격대원이 국방부에 창설된 제8250부대를 거쳐 육군에 편입된다. 중도 이탈자는 별도로 군에 입대하여 병역의무를 마쳐야 했으나 국방부가 이들을 6·25전쟁 중 병역의무를 마친 것으로 인정하면서 종군자 복무 조정을 통해 803명이 추가로 육군의 병적에 등록될 수 있었다. 6·25전쟁 중 유격대원은 민간인이라는 신분상의 문제로 병적에 등록될 수 없었고 자체적인 행정력도 미비하여 개인별 인사자료가 작성되지 않았다. 따라서 이들이 육군의 병적에 등록되는 과정을 확인하는 것은 부대원의 현황을 파악하는 측면에서 큰 의미가 있다. 그러나 미군 제8240부대에 관한 그동안의 연구는 대부분 6·25전쟁 중의 활동에 집중하여 휴전 후 유격대원의 병적 정리 과정은 자세히 연구되지 않았다. 이번 연구의 목적은 미군 제8240부대 산하 유격대원의 국군 편입과정과 이후 이들의 활동을 국가가 인정하는 과정을 세부적으로 검토하고 정확한 현황을 소개하는 것이다. 이를 위해 당시 작성된 국방부와 육군의 기록을 토대로 이들의 국군 편입과정과 이후의 종군자 복무 조정 결과를 검토하였다.

Abstract

This study investigated the process where guerrillas in the US 8240th AU were registered in the military registry of the ROK Armed Forces after the Korean War Armistice. During the Korean War, more than 20,000 Koreans served as guerrillas in the US 8240th AU. After the Korean War Armistice, approximately 11,000 of them were incorporated into the ROK Armed Forces through the 8250th AU, which was created in the MND. While the dropouts were required to enlist separately in the military and complete their military service, the MND recognized them as having completed their military service during the Korean War, and subsequently additional 803 could be registered in the military registry of the ROKorea Armed Forces through civilian veterans military service adjustment. During the Korean War, guerrillas could not be registered in the military registry due to their civilian status, and no personnel data was prepared for each of the individuals due to a lack of administrative functions at that time. Hence, it holds great significance to reveal how they were registered in the military registry of the ROK Armed Forces in terms of understanding the status of the guerrillas. However, most of the previous studies on the US 8240th Army Unit have focused on their activities during the Korean War, and how their military records were handled after the Korean War Armistice has not been studied in detail. The purpose of this study is to examine in detail and describe the process where guerrillas in the US 8240th AU were incorporated into the ROK Armed Forces and how their activities were subsequently recognized by the country. For this purpose, this study reviewed the process of their incorporation to the ROK Armed Forces and subsequent civilian veterans military service adjustment based on available records prepared by the MND and the ROK Army at that time.
