A number of contemporary South Korean films are dominated by the image of male heroism. On the contrary, women are marginalised and absent from the narrative in those films. Therefore, this paper explores masculinity in relation to trauma theory in contemporary South Korean cinema. In so doing, it illustrates to male protagonists are suffering from their traumatic experiences. In other words, this hysterical masculinity shows the masculine crisis. I draw to a close by mentioning the answers that I explore by discussing this study which is male hysteria in popular South Korean cinema. I conclude what I examine the dynamics of this traumatic masculinity throughout this paper begins with an understanding of the definition of trauma, and the unique situation of social contexts that has surrounded films since the late 1990s. For the purposes of this study, I have limited the discussion to films since that period. Then, I suggest that contemporary South Korean cinema focuses on masculinity, especially traumatic masculinity.
