인류세의 도시성 안에서 재난 영화를 번역하기 - 행위자 연결망 이론을 중심으로

본 연구는 오늘날 재난 영화의 미학적 양상이 사뭇 달라지고 있는 현상에 주목하여, 이러한 변화의 양상을 ‘도시성’ 안에서 진단해 보고자 한다. 역사적으로 ‘도시 경험’은 번잡스러우나 외부로부터 안전하다는 보편적 인식 아래 있었다. 하지만 바야흐로 전 세계가 하나로 엮이는 글로벌 체제로 전환됨에 따라 이제 안전한 도시는 옛말이 됐다. 국제 정치에 대한 불안이 9․11사태와 같은 도시 테러 양상으로 나타났고, 지역적 병리 현상은 도시 간에 초연결적으로 바이러스가 확산하는 팬데믹 국면을 드러냈다. 기후 위기, 지구 온난화 등 인류세의 모든 현안 또한 도시 문제로 집약되면서 세계화라는 단어만큼이나 도시성은 부정적인 의미를 함축하게 되었다. 도시는 인간이 창조한 가장 획기적인 인공물 중 하나이지만, 근경의 도시성은 문명의 이기와 생태의 위기의 목전에서 인류를 시험에 들게 하고 있다. 도시재난을 주제로 한 종전의 영화들이 이와 같은 양극의 문제를 극한의 서사로 몰아갈 때, 여전한 결말은 인간 행위에 의한 인간 종(種) 승리의 구가였다. ‘도시에서 주체적 행위는 오직 인간에게 국한되는가’라는 질문은 배경으로 물러나 있던 무생물, 비인간의 행위와 접속됨으로써 요지부동한 인간 중심 사상의 각성을 촉발하게 한다. 따라서 본 연구의 목적은 바로 도심 속 비인간들의 행위와 인간의 행위가 어떻게 도시성을 생성하고, 구축하는가를 밝혀내는 것이다. 특히 이를 위해 브루노 라투르의 행위자-연결망 이론 개념을 경유하여 도시 재난 영화를 분석하고자 한다. 이러한 작업은 흔히 사물의 객관성이 우위라는 사실을 강조하는 것이라기보단 비인간 사물과 인간이 어떻게 공생하는지를 증명하고, 이로써 재난 영화 비평의 새로운 영역을 마련하고자 하는 것이다.
Abstract
This study focuses on the changing aesthetics of today's disaster films and attempts to characterize these changes within the context of urbanity. Historically, the urban experience has been universally recognized as bustling but safe from the outside world. However, with the transition to a globalized world, safe cities have become a thing of the past. International political unrest has manifested itself in the form of urban terrorism, such as the events of 9.11, and local pathologies have given way to pandemics, with viruses spreading hyper-connectedly between cities. The climate crisis, global warming, and all other issues of the Anthropocene have also been converged into urban problems, and urbanity has come to have as many negative connotations as the word globalization. Cities are one of the most groundbreaking man-made creations, but urbanization in the near future is testing humanity on the brink of civilization's triumph and ecological crisis. When previous films on urban disasters have pushed these polarizing issues to extreme narratives, the ending has always been the triumph of the human species over human behavior. But when we look to nature for answers to the global ecological crisis, the second nature, the city, provides the answer. The question of whether subjective action in cities is limited to humans triggers an awakening of stagnant anthropocentric ideas by connecting them to the actions of inanimate objects and non-humans that have been retreating into the background. The aim of this study is to analyze urban disaster films through Bruno Latour's concept of actor-networks in order to understand how non-human acts in urban centers and human acts create and construct urbanity. Rather than suggesting the dominance of objectivity, this method will demonstrate the symbiosis between non-human objects and humans and open up new areas of disaster film criticism.
