Abstract

Internal working model is a core conceptual element of attachment theory which has drawn the attention from clinicians as well as researchers. However, the internal working model is not a well-articulated concept in ways that the counselor can make it at his or her disposal for the purpose of various interventions. Attachment theorists have provided several different definitions of the internal working model. This may undermine further one’s efforts in utilizing the concept of internal working model in the arena of counseling. The pastoral counselor is called to serve those who are in pain or anguish for whatever reasons. Under the circumstance that attachmentbased therapy is being widely practiced, she or he faces unique challenges of integrating secular psychology in the field of pastoral counseling. However, the integration process is not an easy task. There are many things to take into consideration for the effective integration. However despite the potential pitfalls in the process of integration, it is worth doing it because such an effort can contribute to the development of pastoral counseling. This paper is an example of how integration of secular psychology with the field of pastoral counseling takes place. It takes the concept of the internal working model as an integration experiment. For an effective work, it makes an overall review of the internal working model so that one can have a clear understanding of it. The paper addresses how traumatic experiences undermine one’s sense of worth and influence the development of his or her internal working model. In particular, one’s maladaptive working models tend to make negative influences throughout life. Considering all the factors related to internal working model, the pastoral counselor is in a unique position of translating various aspects of the internal working model. This paper examine an example of the good translation for the task of integrating psychology and theology. The ultimate goal of the integration between two different disciples is to help people recover from their anguish and move toward God, who is our ultimate comforter.
