Abstract
When a dream is expressed as a narrative, it has a kind of linguistic structure. The fact that dreams have both linguistic structures and concrete meanings shows a connection between depth psychology and structural semiotics. Structural semiotics gives some insight into the interpretation of dreams, which, from the view of Jungian psychology, reveal universal rather than individual characteristics. The Jungian theory of the union of opposites suggests to us a third option that goes further beyond the limitation of the binary opposites. The view of C. S. Peirce, who suggests three dimensions of sign, different from F. de Saussure, shares some basic principles of dreams with the Jungian school. The subjective interpretation of dreams by Jungians concentrates on the dream text itself, just as structural semiotics does. The dream analysis of the Jungian school shares the following three characteristics with structuralism and Peirce’s semiotics in that it communicates through signs (symbols) and focuses on the universal tendencies rather than the individual characteristics of the dream. First, the text itself: Structuralist semiotic discourse analysis focuses on the text itself, excluding the tendency or socio-cultural background of the subject (author or community). Second, the archetypal structure: The mental structure composed of consciousness, the individual unconscious, and the collective unconscious is based on Plato's dualism, in which all mental activities can be transmitted through the integration of the opposites. Third, the combination of symbols: The fact that all signs are combined with other signs to create a meaning is still useful in dream analysis. By showing one dream example, the writer argues that structural semiotics compensates for Jungian dream interpretation as well as ensures its appropriateness.
