Abstract
This paper aims to integratively integrate the understanding of guilt and shame through spiritual and psychodynamic perspectives from Genesis 3:1-21 and John 4:1-42. Guilt and shame can be more deeply understood when viewed from these two perspectives. To do so, this research explores representative psychodynamic theories regarding guilt and shame such as the theories of Judith Jacobson, Heinz Kohut, Melanie Klein, Donald W. Winnicott, and Helen Block Lewis. Then, this paper examines empirical research that verifies the psychodynamic theories regarding guilt and shame. Jacobson explains that healthy guilt or shame is developed depending on the maturity of the super-ego. Kohut views that shame is developed by from the deficit of the idealized and emphathicempathic self-object. Klein and Winnicott view guilt as a relational ability of the mature ego. Lewis differentiates between guilt as a field-independent response to one's behavior from and shame as a field-dependent response to one's self. Empirical research confirms the dynamics of guilt and shame suggested by psychodynamic theories. Healthy guilt is functional in fostering a sense of responsibility and recovering relationships, whereas punishable and compulsive guilt is dysfunctional, Shame is mainly dysfunctional. Human beings who disobeyed and fell from God's image cannot but experience guilt and shame. The dynamics suggested by psychodynamic theories can be found in this spiritual nature of guilt and shame., God and Jesus first approached Adam and Eve and Jesus approached a Samaritan woman who responded with shame toward their sins, and accepted their shame., and God and Jesus urged them to confess their sins. The grace of redemption by Jesus Christ helps Christians recover their relationship with God and others through healthy guilt and take off abandon the shame. Helathy Healthy guilt is different from punitive or compulsive condemnation. Christian therapists are able to provide insight and good-object experiences to people suffering from guilt and shame by mediating God's love and grace.
