본 글은 나이듦에 대한 인식 변화와 시니어 회중 돌봄을 위한 방안에 대한 연구이다. 우리 사회에서 많은 시니어들이 미처 준비가 되지 않은 상태에서 연장된 노화기를 맞이하고 있다. 이러한 상황에서 신앙을 가진 시니어들은 세속적인 노화문화에 이끌리며, 나이듦에 대한 부정적인 인식과 태도에 사로잡혀 나이듦을 아름다움으로 경험하지 못하기 쉽다. 나이듦 속에 깃든 영적 의미를 파악하지 못하고, 나이듦을 죽음에 가까워가고 소멸을 향해 나아가는 과정으로 간주하며 살게 된다. 그런데, 인생 후반부에 다양한 상실이 동반되는 나이듦은 우리의 영적정체성이 더 선명해지고, 소명을 갱신하고, 삶의 활력을 이어가며 영적 성장으로 나아가도록 촉진하는 환경으로 볼 수 있다. 영성노년학은 노화에 대해 이러한 새로운 인식과 태도 위에서, 영적 정체성, 소명의식, 삶의 의미, 영적 성장을 중심으로 나이듦을 설명하며 신앙인의 건강한 노화를 제안하고 있다. 목회돌봄 실천가들은 심리학적인 노화 이해와 영성노년학적 프로그램과 자료를 능동적으로 활용하며 효율적인 시니어 돌봄을 실행할 수 있다. 인생후반부를 살아가는 시니어 회중이 신앙 안에서 나이를 잊고 활력 있게 살아가며 영적 성숙을 추구하고자 할 때, 나이듦에 대한 인식과 이미지는 그들에게 큰 영향을 미친다. 하지만, 세속적인 노화문화는 나이듦을 부정적으로 채색하며 시니어들을 두려움과 우울함으로 이끌기 쉽다. 이런 상황에서 시니어 목회돌봄 실천가들은 시니어들이 나이듦의 아름다움을 온전히 인식하고 드러내도록 도와야 한다. 본 글에서는 시니어 돌봄이 처한 현실과 문제를 살펴보고 비판적으로 성찰하며, 나이듦을 아름다움으로 새롭게 정의하고, 이에 근거하여 효율적인 시니어 돌봄을 위한 이론적 틀을 제안하고 있다. 이를 통해 이전에 겪어보지 못했던 ‘오래 살면서 늙어가는 일’을 경험하는 시니어들은 어떻게 늙어가야 하는 지에 대한 신앙적인 통찰을 얻고 실천방안을 고민해볼 수 있다. 시니어 회중의 영적, 인격적, 심리적 성숙을 위한 목회돌봄 사역 현장을 위해 더 치밀한 준비와 대책이 필요하다. 이와 함께 사역 현장 뿐 아니라 각자의 소명이 이루어지는 삶의 곳곳에서 나이듦의 여정이 지닌 아름다움을 깊이 인식되고 그 아름다움을 계속 드러내야 한다. 이를 위해 중년층과 시니어 회중을 위한 돌봄 및 훈련 프로그램을 개발되어야 하고 시니어 돌봄 전문 사역자의 양성과 훈련이 요구된다.
Abstract
This study focuses mainly on attitudes toward aging and suggestions for Christian senior care. In this article, I critique current issues of senior care in Korea. Then, I suggest a theoretical framework of efficacious senior care so that seniors can gain some insights into how to become older gracefully as Christians and ponder the manner of putting their insights into their lives. Many seniors enter into their prolonged journey of aging without being prepared. They easily can be caught by negative attitudes about aging, without having a chance to figure out the hidden meaning in aging. Aging during the second half of life can be experienced as a growth experience in which seniors can move forward for a clearer self-identity, renewal of their calling, and spiritual growth, while remaining ageless in the Lord. Spiritual gerontology explains Christian aging and guides people to age gracefully, centering spiritual self-identity, recognition of calling, meaning for life, and spiritual growth based on new attitudes about aging. Pastoral care practitioners can offer senior care, taking good advantage of programs and resources of the field of spiritual gerontology. Attitudes and images socially imposed on aging are greatly influential to seniors in a negative manner as they try to live agelessly, maintain vitality, and seek spiritual growth. The secular culture of aging can easily lead seniors into fear and despair by depriving them of the meaning of aging. In this situation, pastoral care practitioners can help seniors recognize and seek the beauty of aging. To be effective, pastoral care practitioners need to set up goals and strategies for care of seniors’ spiritual, psychological, and personal growth. Also, senior caregivers can support seniors to maintain vitality while seeking their callings and enjoying the journey of aging. The church has an important role, both in developing senior care and training programs for the middle-aged and aged and in training professional senior caregivers.
