인생 후반부에 본격적으로 집중적인 노화가 진행되면서, 시니어들은 다양한 상실을 경험하게 된다. 이러한 상실은 시니어들의 삶의 질을 저하시키고, 심리적인 두려움과 불안을 가져다줄 수 있다. 신앙을 가진 시니어들은 연장된 노화기로 인해 오랜 기간 동안 삶의 질이 낮은 상태로 살아가며 영적 침체를 겪게 될 수도 있다. 이와 함께, 심리적으로 위축되고, 부정적인 자화상이 형성되며, 자존감과 자기효능감이 떨어질 수 있다. 이 과정에서 시니어들은 다양한 방식으로 노화에 대해 의식적, 무의식적으로 저항하며 대처하게 된다. 그런데 많은 경우 노화 상실에 대한 건강한 대처가 이루어지지 못하고 있다고 할 수 있다. 이런 이유로 정서적, 사회적, 심리학적인 건강한 대처에 더해, 영적인 차원의 성숙한 대처가 필요하다. 영성노년학은 우리 사회에 고착된 노화에 대한 부정적 인식과 태도의 전환을 추구하고, 신앙적인 노화 문화 안에서 중년기 이후의 심리적, 인격적, 영적 성숙을 추구한다. 신앙인들은 새로운 노화 문화를 통해 영적 성숙과 함께 인격적, 심리적 성숙을 추구하며 삶의 질이 향상될 수 있다. 노화 현상으로 인한 점진적인 상실을 궁극적인 상실인 죽음으로 가는 단계들로만 인식한다면, 노년기의 삶은 점차 위축되고 영적으로 침체를 겪게 되기 쉽다. 이러한 상황에 대해 목회상담가와 돌봄 제공자들은 영성노년학의 자원들을 활용하여 노화 상실에 대한 목회신학적 성찰을 해야한다. 이를 통해 신앙을 가진 시니어들이 노화 상실에 성숙한 대처를 하도록 효율적으로 도울 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
Seniors experience variable losses related to aging in late life. These losses will lower the quality of life among seniors and bring some fear and anxiety to them. Then, the elderly come to live a low-quality life during the prolonged elderlyhood, experiencing spiritual difficulties. The sense of loss and fear in late life will shrink psychologically and develop their negative self-images, and bring low self-esteem and low self-efficiency. In this process of aging, they will cope with their losses related to aging both consciously and unconsciously in the matter of anti-aging. In many cases, seniors experience unhealthy ways of coping with their losses. For this reason, they need to learn how to cope with their losses in an emotionally, socially, psychologically healthy manner, but most of all they need spiritually mature ways of coping. Spiritual gerontology seek for a new positive attitude on aging, and personal, psychological, and spiritual growth in late life. Christian seniors are in need of new culture of aging, without following the secular culture of fear-driven aging. Aging brings us gradual losses but it is not supposed to be recognized as a stages toward death, the eventual loss. As long as understanding aging in that way, the life in the second half our life journey will encounter with “trouble and sorrow” and spiritual difficulties. In this situation, pastoral caregivers should be able to help the seniors with unhealthy ways of coping with their losses related to aging so that they can cope with it in the Christian culture of aging. It could be possible when pastoral caregivers do pastoral theological reflection on the aging and help caretakers cope with it based on the resources of spiritual gerontology.
