Abstract

This paper aims to explain that pastoral care for patients in faith communities can evolve through the understanding of illness narrative from the communal-contextual paradigm of pastoral care and narrative medicine. This paper presents the limitations of medical narrative, the differences between the concepts of disease and illness, and the meanings of illness narrative to understand the lived experiences of a patient. Storytellers and listeners use three shared ways of narrating illness: restitution, chaos, and quest. These concepts show that in listening to a patient's illness narrative/testimony, the listener/ caregiver becomes the witness of the testimony by constructing and interpreting the meanings of illness narratives. Furthermore, this study suggests that communities of the Christian faith are a remission society for pastoral care. They are based on mutual listening, remembering, and reconstructing the meanings of illness experiences within the communal-contextual paradigm of John Patton. The characteristics of a remission society include redefining the meanings of a good life, human value with productivity, and co-writing life narratives through caring relationships. Finally, this paper proposes that pastoral care for patients can include (1) paying attention to the different aspects of illness experiences, (2) honoring the chaos narratives and exploring the quest narratives, and (3) cultivating narrative competence with a close reading of illness narratives in the Bible.
