Abstract
Emotional alienation, increasingly intensified in contemporary society and within faith communities, profoundly influences both personal identity and the recovery of faith. This study examines the dynamics of alienation and recovery by conducting a parallel analysis of the experiences of a modern counselee and the Shulammite woman in the Song of Songs. The counselee’s alienation is primarily expressed in psychological and developmental dimensions, while the Shulammite’s alienation is presented in symbolic and existential dimensions. Nevertheless, both reveal a recurring structure of deprivation, oppression, and loss. The counselee experienced emotional deprivation, imposed roles, and loss of self within the family; emotional repression, violation of dignity, and exclusion within the church community; and inner conflict, self-repression, and relational disconnection in her personal life. Through counseling, however, she overcame family alienation through relational invitation, mutual belonging, and identity confession. She transcended social alienation through communal solidarity, transformation of language, and self-declaration, and recovered inner dignity through emotional openness, self-acceptance, and ultimate union of love. The Shulammite likewise experienced alienation within family, society, and inner life. Yet through her beloved, she overcame these experiences by relational invitation, mutual belonging, and identity confession in the family; communal solidarity, transformation of language, and self-declaration in society; and emotional openness, self-acceptance, and ultimate union of love in the inner self. This comparative analysis demonstrates that both recovery processes share structural parallels. When the two narratives are read in dialogue, concrete pathways for overcoming alienation emerge. Such a dialogical space is not merely a comparison but a hermeneutical encounter in which Scripture and the counselee’s story illuminate each other, shaping a healing narrative. Thus, overcoming alienation is not achieved by individual will or technique alone but within an intersubjective field where biblical interpretation, self-understanding, and the counselor’s accompaniment converge. This study suggests that Scripture can serve as a vital resource in pastoral counseling, enabling those who suffer alienation and disconnection to recover as dignified subjects.
