라트갈레는 라트비아 공화국을 구성하는 4개 지역 중 하나이며 전체 인구가 26만으로 네 개 지역 중 가장 많다. 라트비아어와는 차별된 단독언어로 분류되기도 하는 지역어로 대변되는 라트갈레는 발트 독일인들과 독일루터교 기반 서유럽 문화권 영향하에 발전한 라트비아 내 다른 지역들과 달리 슬라브, 가톨릭 등의 영향을 받아 독특한 문화적 양상을 보이고 있다. 이 논문에서는 우리가 알고 있는 것과는 다른 발트 3국의 일면인 라트갈레를 통해 현재 물적 인적 교류가 늘어나고 있는 라트비아 및 발트 3국의 또 다른 면목을 발굴해 보며 이를 통해 여러 문화와 민족의 접점 지역에서 나타나는 혼종적 정체성의 일반적, 혹은 지역을 중심으로 한 차별적 특성의 양상과 형성 과정을 연구하여 지역 이해도와 연구 분야 확장을 꾀함으로써 발트 3국을 보는 더 정확한 학문적 시각과 저변확대를 마련해 보고자 함이다.
Abstract
Latgale is located in the Eastern part of Latvia, which comprises the republic of Latvia with Vidzeme, Kurzeme and Zemgale. Various cultural and ethnic identities have been co-existing which necessitate a specific academic approach and comprehension of the region to understand the cultural diversity and multi-layered facets formulated during the span of history. The perception of Latgale as a region is rather ‘abstract’ and ‘conceptual’. Latgalian people emphasize the emotion of belonging and ethnic solidarity as well as the distinctiveness from their titular nation. The perception of Latgale was forged with multifaceted layers compiled on the collective memories of residents along with the transition of nations, ruling people and political authorities which dominated in Latvian society during the country's history. The purpose of this thesis is to enhance the comprehension of the Latgale region and to expand the spectrum of academic approaches to Latvia with analysis of distinct cultural characteristics of the region and the process of its formulation. This work consists of analyzing the multi-layer identities displayed in the borderland among various cultures and nations and to discovering different aspects of Latvia, with which the material and man-power exchange is growing with the Republic of Korea.
