초록

Having been independently developed from linguistics, graphonomy should be seen from various points including taxonomy, archeology, morphology, education, aesthetics, and most importantly, socio-cultural history. As a social product, the characteristics of a letter has been changed historically as shown in the case of China's inscriptions on bones and tortoise carapaces or Egyptian hieroglyphics. Korean, known to be invented by King Sejong, has been used by different users. First, it was used by major officials, followed by minor officials, middle class intellectuals, emerging intellectuals, and lastly general people through about 500years. Due to its attributes of a print-type letter, Korean lacks some aesthetic beauty. In addition, like other East Asian letters, Korean shows high frequency of using two or three letters together, which means shortage of each letter in transferring meanings. However such phenomenon also menas that East Asian people want to express many other non-linguistic symbols such as color or figures through letters. Overall, Korean also shows the characteristics of general history of a letter which transmits from the ruling class to that of people.

Abstract

Having been independently developed from linguistics, graphonomy should be seen from various points including taxonomy, archeology, morphology, education, aesthetics, and most importantly, socio-cultural history. As a social product, the characteristics of a letter has been changed historically as shown in the case of China's inscriptions on bones and tortoise carapaces or Egyptian hieroglyphics.
