Abstract

This article examines the relationship between space and the Bildungsroman through the movement of Oliver Twist, the hero of Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens. Bildungsroman is a literary genre that describes a young hero's development into adulthood. However, Oliver finally achieves his social identity by moving from the city, London, to a garden in the suburbs. It asserts that space plays an important role in his growth. The city has a post-human subject, which is denied by the modernist vision, the crowd. It forces an individual to lose their power and voice. As Oliver steps into the city, he is under the control of the crowd. He gets confused and becomes an object. He needs to move out of the city to build an identity. After being rescued by Brownlow, he becomes a member of a middle-class family, the Maylies. He restores his identity by cultivating a garden and being educated by Rose Maylie. However, this becomes unstable as Oliver begins to be threatened by Monks and Fagin. It is resolved by removing the power of the city, and Oliver finally grows out of threats and danger. This growth does not mean Oliver's completion, but being lost in his possibilities. Also, space is reduced to a human object. Finally, the structural characteristics of the Bildungsroman show that the interests of society and the growth of individuals coincide with each other, raising questions about the meaning of a society in which such subjects are accepted.
