Abstract
Han and Dang era share similar period background-socially, culturally, and scientifically. However, if approaching this from the progressive and developmental view of social changes, the idea, the emotion, and social thought of the people in each era would show individual different aspects. Love is the most universal form of emotion shown in folk songs of Han and Dan era, but there is a need to explore how the view of love-a way of expressing love in each era-has been changed. Love, which was described by Yuefushi in Han era and Quzici in Dang era, appears as an oath of love, doubt and a change of mind, separation and a spite, and resistance against an institution. As people became open and kisaeng's house became popular from Han to Dang era, a theme of expressing love varied. Here, we can compare and examine some views of love in love expression described in folk songs of each era. Folk songs of each era commonly show an intense pursuit of free love by expressing straightforwardly and boldly although it was the days of feudalism. Besides, there are rich contents that women would keep their vow of chastity and would willingly submit to sufferings to keep love. This suggests that a woman's love expression to a one man becomes stronger as patriarchal system forces a woman to surrender her chastity to a man.
