이 글은 노자의 미학사상을 보다 체계화할 수 있는 방안을 試論的으로 모색해 보는 것이다. 내용상으로는 『노자』를 중심으로 하여 노자 미학사상의 기저에 관해 고찰하는 것이 주가 된다. 『노자』에서 사용된 ‘美’와 ‘善’의 용례 및 의미, 그리고 이들의 관계, 善한 삶의 방식 등에 관한 것이 주요 내용이다. 노자는 당시의 혼란한 사회 상황을 비판하는 것으로부터 그의 철학을 전개하였고, 그런 가운데서 미학사상과 관련되는 그의 독특한 견해를 보여주었다. 노자가 보기에 당시 사회의 혼란은 주로 위정자들의 주관적인 심미의식과 윤리도덕 의식에 말미암은 것이었다. 이런 문제 의식과 비판을 바탕으로 성립된 노자의 미학사상은 ‘온전한 삶을 위한 미학’이라는 차원에서 定位된다. 『노자』에서 긍정되는 미는 그 자체로 독립적인 의의를 지니는 것이 아니라, 반드시 不爭을 특징으로 하는 善과 더불어 드러나는 것이다. 『노자』에서의 美를 곧바로 道와 연결시키기보다는, 그것을 善과 연결시켜 이해할 때 노자의 미학사상에 관한 보다 체계적인 논의를 진행할 수 있다. 노자적 견지에서 볼 때, 진실한 삶의 양태로서의 善과 그 자태로서의 美가 아니라면, 그것은 오히려 인생과 사회의 왜곡․추악․불선의 발단이 될 뿐이다. 『노자』에서의 ‘美不美’는 ‘味無味(savour that which has no flavour)’․‘色無色’․‘音無音’을 포괄하는 것으로서 예술 작품이나 『노자』에서 미는 주로 이상적 인간상의 인격미로 묘사되고 있으며, 더불어 최소한의 의식주 및 이상적 정치 형태와 관련되는 미가 인정된다. 이상적 인간상의 특징은 그 내적인 정신 경지가 높아질수록 그의 외표가 담박한 자태를 보인다는 점이다.
Abstract
This article aims to find a way to systematize various ideas of Lao Tzu's aesthetic sense. It focuses on understanding the basis of Lao Tzu's aesthetic sense by means of interpreting the text Lao Tzu. I scrutinize the examples and meanings of two words, 'good' and 'beauty', their relationship, and the good ways of life. Lao Tzu started to develop his doctrine by criticizing the situations of the disordered society at that time, which included his peculiar views about aesthetics. In his opinion, the disorder of society in those days was particularly caused by politicians' subjective aesthetic sense and ethical sense. On the basis of the critical argument of this sort, his aesthetic sense was established as the aesthetics for the perfect life. In that context the beauty itself has no independent significance, but it comes together with the goodness characterized by no-conflict. I believe that the fundamental understanding of Lao Tzu's aesthetic sense should consider the relationship between beauty and good, instead of tao. Lao Tzu seems to opine that if good and beauty have no aspects of sincere life, they rather become the origins of distortion, filth and evil in the human life and society. In the text Lao Tzu, the phrase 'beauty having no grace' which comes along with other phrases, such as 'savour having no flavour', 'color having no hue', and 'sound having no tone', can be understood not only as the basis of Lao Tzu's aesthetic sense but also as the particular aspect of transcending general art works and aesthetic sense. The beauty in the text Lao Tzu is mainly described as the personal beauty of the ideal person and also as the beauty related to minimal requisites for life and idealized political aspects.
