초록

The aim of this study is to consider that how ‘life’of a child of mixed blood is defined in her work, The New Year written in 1968 by Pearl S. Buck, the first female Nobel Prize winner and cultural translator, and how she breathes new life into the child based on Asian values. In other words, the way to project life force of human being and bioethics provided by the cultural translator onto the child who is a half-Korean and half-American, Kim Christopher, is studied on the basis of oriental philosophy. The three elements of life defined by oriental philosophy are breathing, blood circulation with body temperature, and sense or perception. Pearl S. Buck brings up identity as an important ingredient needed for bioethics via Kim Christopher who has an identity crisis by reason of that he has never won recognition from both mother's country, Korea and father's, America. Therefore this paper illuminates the writer's way to authorize him legally and ethically with the Third Space.
