Abstract

The study aims to examine the mediating effect of self-esteem on the relationship between acculturative stress and self-rated health among marriage migrant women in Korea. Using the fifth-wave data from the second cohort of the Multicultural Adolescent Panel Study (MAPS), a total of 1,302 foreign-born women who were legally married to Korean men were included in the analysis. The sociodemographic characteristics of the participants were identified through frequency and descriptive analyses. Confirmatory factor analysis was conducted to verify construct validity, including convergent and discriminant validity of the major variables. Structural equation modeling was then performed to analyze the structural relationships among acculturative stress, self-esteem, and self-rated health, and bootstrapping was used to examine the significance of indirect effects. The results showed that acculturative stress had a significant negative effect on self-esteem (β = –.283, p < .001), while self-esteem had a significant positive effect on self-rated health (β = .205, p < .001). In contrast, the direct effect of acculturative stress on self-rated health was not statistically significant. These findings suggest that self-esteem mediates the link between acculturative stress and self-rated health. Strengthening self-esteem may help improve health outcomes for marriage migrant women.
