This essay examines the ways in which literature interacts with philosophy (and vice versa) in Western civilization from Greek tragedy to modern literature. Simultaneously, it also seeks to explore the changes within and significance of this relationship between literature and philosophy in terms of Nietzschean and Derridean critiques of a long tradition of dogmatic conviction that truth is fixed, priori, and transcendental. By discussing literature in terms of the notion of the Dionysian thought in Nietzsche and the concept of writing in Derrida, I argue that the deconstructionists’ endeavors to challenge the monolithic knowledge system in the Western tradition since Plato might be effective in either defending or defining literature as forms of life whose essential task is both to re-present and to represent: to narrate what is taking place in the world and to speak for the disenfranchised and the marginalized in the post- Enlightenment era.
