초록

In “Loneliness”, Sherwood Anderson deals not only with the themes of loneliness and alienation which bind together all the stories in Winesburg, Ohio, but also shows his artistic vision through the story of Enoch Robinson, a failed painter. Enoch’s infantility and self-centered thought cause him not to have a normal relationship with others and be in harmony with reality. He creates many stories through imagination but does not disclose his real intention in his painting. As his artistic vision is misunderstood by his fellow artists, he escapes from reality and makes shadow people in his extreme loneliness. But when a mature woman intrudes upon his sanctuary, the imaginary world he made is destroyed and he lives out his life alone and defeated. Although Enoch is a failed artist who cannot integrate his artistic ideal and reality, Anderson emphasizes that it is important to search for an inner truth hidden below the surface of life through Enoch’s story.
