초록

In Search of Lost Time by Marcel Proust contains various artistic techniques. Specifically the technique of paintings plays an important role in forming one of unique aspects of Proustian writing, namely "style". Proust compared style to color and observed that style for the writer, no less than color for the painter, is a question not of technique but of vision. Proustian style is embodied in his writing as a technique of paintings used by Impressionist painters. For Proust, Impressionist painters were guides who introduced him to the realm of beauty and truth. He learned from them a way to recognize the magical power in tedious realities which transforms ordinary things into something else in beauty in an imperceptible way. Elstir, a fictional painter in his novel, achieves the impressionist technique in his paintings, especially The Port of Carquethuit. I analyse Elstir's imaginary paintings in terms of pictorial writing, which is a product of the creation of style.
