초록

John Fowles’s The French Lieutenant’s Woman is well-known as a postmodern metafiction in which the author experiments with narrative modes by juxtaposing traditional realism with postmodern narrative devices. As the traditional realistic mode in the novel strives to capture Victorian people and their ways of life from religion to fashion, its postmodern perspective deployed in the self-reflexive manner of story-telling debunks and deflates the Victorian ostentation, rigidity and hypocrisy embedded in Victorian minds. Fowles also uses epigraphs effectively to add meanings to each chapter, which mainly consist of quotations from the works by great Victorian thinkers. This paper examines the contemporary ideas reflected in the novel and how these ideas such as Darwinism and Marxism affected/attributed to the change of 19th society, while tracing how each character’s act of Free Will as such used in Existentialism changes the course of life. Especially the protagonist, Charles Smithson, is discussed to see his “evolution” into a man of “newself.”
