Korean EFL learners’ perceptions of World Englishes: Analysis of an English classroom and comments on YouTube

This study presents a qualitative analysis of an English classroom displayed on a Korean TV show and learners’ responses to it. Based on the nethnographic approach, the movie clip of an English classroom on the selected TV show Welcome Back to School was analyzed through the critical discourse analysis, and 171 Korean learners’ comments to the English classroom on YouTube are analyzed using a thematic analysis. The analysis showed that Korean EFL learners still face pressure to speak with standard English pronunciation in their classrooms. The analysis also showed that Korean EFL learners have a mixed view of World Englishes in terms of the purpose of communication, the need of standard English pronunciation, and the goal of learning English pronunciation. The findings of this study offer important pedagogical implications of the application of World Englishes to Korean English classrooms.
